Village on the River - Wind Band
Wind Band - The Meuse is located along this village. She comes flowing to it and flows along friendly. She leans back from there. These are the first lines from the famous book of Antoon Coolen on the village Lith and its inhabitants.
Composer Leon Vliex got inspired by the role the river has played in the past and present of the village. In many places in this composition the river past flows past the listener and baptized in the Meuse water allowing the composer to have different musical stories sound. Thus he describes the ancient legend of the Pike from Lith, the river monster that jumped over the dike and vanished into a small lake. Until one day when he jumped back happily and looked mockingly at the astonished villagers.
Part two tells the story of the chapel of Lith. This was built from the stones of a World War II shot-church, in gratitude for not having any World War II casualties in Lith.
In part three the listener visits the many little orphans in the village. Little orphans are the names for the higher paths that meander through the village. With these paths the villagers kept their feet dry on their ways to the church in times of flood.
