March Opus 99 - Wind Band
Wind Band - Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev is considered one of the most important composers of the 20th century. He was also a gifted pianist and conductor. On 11 April 1891, he was born in Sontsovka in UKRAINE. His musical talent soon proved, from his fourth he played piano at age five, he wrote his first song at the age of nine and his first opera. From his thirteenth to his three twentieths he studied at the conservatory in St. Petersburg. In 1918 he moved to America where he lived for several years. Then he lived for some years in Paris. In 1936, at the height of the Stalinist terror, he returned to Russia, where he was given a privileged position, despite the fact that Soviet music critics are regarded as difficult and elitist. Prokofiev also wrote several original works for wind band. The March opus 99 is one of those compositions. He wrote this in 1943 and the main wind music conductor of the Soviet Union, Major Petrov, gave his orchestra shortly after the premiere of this work during a radio show. Prokofiev died on March 5, 1953 in Moscow, on the same day as the evil Soviet dictator Stalin. Irony of speaking!
