Ceremonial March for he Pageant ”The Capture of Kars” - Wind Band
Wind Band - In 1880 received a number of Russian composers to compose a series of "tableaux vivants" (living pictures) in honor of the 25-year reign of Alexander II. This project was ultimately not realized, but we do have a characteristic march by Modest Mussorgsky owe. He wrote this work for the tableau vivant that the conquest of Kars (a city in eastern Turkey) had to portray and thereby hold back on themes he already used previously unfinished work. The main theme of the march is a Russian folk melody which is varied several times and culminating in a triumphant fortissimo. The orintaals colored middle part - by Mussorgsky called "alla Turca" - contains an origin of Kurdish melody. This Ceremonial March (Marche solennelle) instrument did Mussorgsky himself for symphony orchestra. Exactly a century later - in 1980 - edited arranger Henk de Vlieger this composition for the band of the Rotterdam Conservatory.
